Tesla, SPARKS, NV

Value Delivered

Shambaugh’s fire protection group provided construction, installation, and fabrication services on-site for this large-scale project, including sprinklers, fire protection systems, and piping.

At the time of construction, the Gigafactory was the largest building in the world by footprint, exceeding 5.8 million square feet. To help ensure timely delivery on a project of this size, Shambaugh maintained a high volume of staff onsite—project management and engineering staff peaked at ten, and manpower ranged from four to 78 workers at a time.

Clients Objectives

Tesla sought to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility, the Gigafactory, where they would produce 35 gigawatt hours per year of lithium-ion battery cells to power their products, nearly doubling the world’s current combined rate of battery production.

Scope of Services

Shambaugh’s fire protection team engineered and installed 225 total fire protection systems across the 5.8-million-square-foot site. The systems feature multiple fire suppression technologies, including:

  • Wet
  • Dry
  • Pre-action
  • Deluge
  • Foam systems
  • F500 systems
  • FM200 systems
  • CO2 systems

Other work included the installation of approximately 96,000 sprinklers and the prefabrication and installation of approximately 25 miles of piping.

Client Background

Tesla is a Palo Alto, CA-based vehicle and clean energy company.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, GA

Value Delivered

Shambaugh & Son (Shambaugh) provided new construction and fire protection services for Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation’s (Gulfstream) hangar expansion project at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport in Georgia. The expansion added 110,000 square feet to the facility – a substantial increase capable of housing 100 new staff members.

In order to manage a project of this scope, Shambaugh’s team of fire safety experts leveraged their highly efficient design-build approach coupled with years of field experience. The finished hangar features cutting-edge fire protection systems, which help Gulfstream maintain an exceptionally safe work environment for their employees.

Client Objectives

Gulfstream determined their Brunswick hangar facility needed an expansion in order to better support their existing service center. The service center plays a key role in Gulfstream’s operations, offering personal, one-stop convenience for major inspections, installations, and modifications to business jet aircraft.

Solutions

The project included a wide array of fire protection solutions, and Shambaugh self- performed all of the work they provided to the service center.

During the project, Shambaugh’s team delivered the following:

  • Design and installation of two 150,000-gallon bolted ground storage tanks
  • Three 3,000-gallons-per-minute diesel fire pumps
  • Two automatic high expansion foam systems
  • One foam-water hand hose system
  • One wet riser
  • 1,121 fire sprinkler heads

Client Background

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation designs, develops, manufactures, markets, and services business jet aircraft. Since its founding in the late 1950’s, Gulfstream has produced more than 2,000 aircraft.
