Shambaugh & Son performed the Mechanical and Automatic Temperature Controls for Phase I of the total $30,000,000 Elkhart County Criminal Justice Complex, located on an 80-acre site, which includes the Elkhart County Jail, a Utility Power, and a Warehouse/Maintenance Building. The County Jail includes an intake and processing unit; a medical unit; an institutional kitchen and laundry; video visitation, arraignment courts, and jail administrative space; a Minimum-Medium Custody Unit that provides 768 beds in 16 Cell Blocks with six 8-man cells in each Cell Block; and a Maximum Custody Jail unit with 180 beds in seven 24-bed Cell Blocks and one 12-bed Cell Block.

Highlights included:

  • Two (2) 700hp Steam Boilers fired with adjacent landfill provided gas in lieu of natural gas.
  • One (1) 1000 ton Chiller cooled with adjacent site pond water in lieu of cooling tower method.
  • Eleven (11) AHU’s outfitted with heat transfer wheels for added energy savings by reclaiming heated or cooled air before exhausting it.
